“The girl can sing!”, says Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum entertainer, Sammy Kershaw, in an interview with Nashville Country Club. “Her pitch is so good, she has country soul, her phrasing is great and the way she breathes in the song, it’s unbelievable that she has been sitting out there.” That was the response multi-talented singer/songwriter, Mallory Johnson, received shortly after winning the “Next Country Star” 2015 talent contest in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Raised on Music Icons like Dolly, Merle, and Shania, Mallory has a true love for country music. “I grew up on the legends because that’s what my parents are fans of. My mom used to tour all the time playing country music, so my love for the genre is deep-rooted. I admire artists who aren’t afraid to make waves and break the mold, like Kacey Musgraves, Jason Isbell, and The Dixie Chicks.”

The 2017 Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Spotlight performance winner is no stranger to the stage and has been performing in front of audiences for as long as she can remember. As early as eight years old, she was the youngest ever to perform both Canadian and American National Anthems at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto for an NHL game. As a former, leading member of the 6-time MusicNL award-winning and ECMA nominated Celtic family group “The Cormiers”, Mallory has recorded four albums while traveling throughout the U.S., Canada and Scotland performing theatres and festivals, like Mile One Stadium, the North American Folk Alliance, Exploits Valley Salmon and North Bay Heritage Festival, to name a few.

Adding to her many talents, Mallory has also been very busy in musical theatre. She’s performed with The Spirit of Newfoundland, Theatre St. John’s, Peter MacDonald Productions, Best Kind Productions, TaDa Events, and many others, with some of her favourite roles being “Frenchy” in Grease, “Amber” in Hairspray, “Cindy Lou” in SpiritNL’s adaptation of the Grinch (Grinch, Dressing & Gravy), “Heidi” in [title of show], and “Dolly Parton” in Smoky Mountain Songbird (The Music of Dolly Parton).

Raised in Conception Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador, Mallory is a graduate of the Primary/Elementary Education program at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She has taken voice, piano and dance lessons since she was five years old by some of the best instructors in the province. She later combined her teaching credentials and music experience to teach voice, piano and musical theatre at “City Performance Academy” and “Connie Parsons School of Dance.”

Since her first trip to Nashville to record her album, produced by Kershaw, Mallory has been turning heads in the country music scene and songwriting community, sharing stages with artists like Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Rascal Flatts, and Blake Shelton to name a few. Her debut single “Tupelo” reached #6 on the Canadian Country iTunes Top Songs list and found a home on GAC and Her following single “Good Mistake to Make” broke the top 50 on the Music Row Chart and top 30 on the CDX Breakout Chart. In May of 2018, Mallory released her debut EP, which received three MusicNL nominations for Female Artist of the Year, Country Artist of the Year, and Rising Star.

Even though most of the songs on her EP are penned by other writers, Mallory’s writing certainly hasn’t taken a back seat. She was recently invited to showcase some of her new original material at the 2018 CCMA Songwriter Series, as well as the 2018 MusicNL Songwriter Circle. Her current project however, is in film. Following her audition for the war thriller “Into the Wilderness”, Mallory was not only offered a featured role in the film, but was asked to write music for the soundtrack.
